After Mozambique, South Korea, Luxembourg, New York and Italy, Berlin is the next city portrayed in the series beyond the surface. The surfaces which inspire the paintings witness the berlinese spirit of start-ups, social participation, cultural and political history. They are witnesses of time, of a city, of the way people appropriate a city for themselves and have a say in shaping it. They were designed to look a certain way and have found their own aesthetic over time. They emancipated themselves from what they were supposed to look like. They stand for hazard, autonomy, abandon, ephemerality and individuality.
